This is the kind of story I like to read–the kind of outcome, anyway. (Emphasis near the end mine.)

Woman puts alleged attacker in the hospital

8/11/2009 10:30:02 AM

By Laura Gossman Horihan

Post-Bulletin, Rochester MN

A 24-year-old Rochester man is in the hospital after allegedly attempting to sexually assault a 19-year-old woman Tuesday morning.

According to police Lt. Dan Muyres, the woman was found standing in the intersection of First Avenue and First Street Southwest about 3 a.m., carrying a knife and asking for help.

She told police that a man she’d met in a downtown bar had tried to sexually assault her.

The woman said she used the bathroom in his apartment in the 100 block of First Avenue Southwest and that when she came out, he was naked and sitting on the bed. She said the man grabbed her from behind and put her in a choke hold.

She said she clubbed him on the head with a clothes iron, ran to the kitchen and grabbed a knife, Muyres said. When he came toward her, she swung the knife, cutting his arm and puncturing one of his lungs, Muyres said.

While police were interviewing the woman, the suspect came out of his apartment bloodied. He told police that he’d been attacked by three men.

The man was arrested and taken to Saint Marys Hospital.

Project 88

That’s as far as I got before life interrupted and I had to step away. The Underwood DeLuxe Quiet Tab I was using is back at the office, so I’ll have to finish this via electron.

My ambitious–perhaps too ambitious–plan is to write something/anything every day for the next 88 days, using a different typewriter every day. It may be opinion, it may be pointless rambling, it may be short fiction, or it may be poetry. One of my first ideas was to adapt the concept of 88 characters literally by creating 88 different fictional characters, but I fear that would be to invite pre-NaNo burnout. Nonetheless, expect some talking to myself about November’s plot.

Consider this day #1.

Texas typewriter gathering!

I know this is short notice, but John Payton is hosting a get-together at his place for anyone who enjoys typewriters. John lives in Taylor, TX, just outside Austin. The event is scheduled for Saturday, August 8th.

In John’s words,

It’s nothing fancy, just a small group of typewriter collectors getting together to talk about machines, collecting, and maybe some hands-on work if anybody has a machine with a problem. Of course all of us will be glad for anybody who attends to bring whatever they wish for a “show and tell”. The day’s gathering may well spill over to Sunday, the 9th but the scheduled part starts at nine o’clock Saturday morning.

Anyone interesting in attending can contact John through his Web site, The Mellow ’60s Workshop.

I meant to fix the typos before scanning it. Honest. And I don’t know if all 3000s punch right through the paper and shred their ribbons, but two out of three of mine do no matter how I set the resistance–and the one that doesn’t has problems.
