BOTH sides of the aisle are acting like lunatics. On October 15, a female Mccain supporter in New York had her sign taken away by an Obama supporter. He then broke the stick off of her sign and then proceeded to beat her with it. Then there was the Mccain march held in New York’s West Side, an incident that lead to Obama supporters screaming obscenities at the marchers. Some of the people who were screaming obscenities were accompanied by children.
I’m not saying one side is worse than the other, but when people are getting beaten in the streets for their political beliefs, something is very badly broken.

I agree! Instead of supporters beating one another in the streets, we ought to go back to the days when politicians beat each other on the Senate floor. And who wouldn’t have preferred if Biden and Palin had forgone a debate in favor of a Vice Presidential duel?

I am every day appalled.
I tell you, this is going to get worse before it gets better. There are too many people out there who aren’t thinking. At all. November 4th may be a free-for-all we’ll never forget.
I’m voting tomorrow and I hope it gives me at least a small sense of peace.

I went looking for more info on the guy who beat up the McCain supporter. At random I found this blog post about it. Now, I’m not in any way suggesting that what the guy did wasn’t wrong–he should be jailed on assault–but the comments are very scary, and not just for their appalling grammar and spelling.
A few choice selections, from just the first couple hundred of the 1,700+ comments:
“My advice is, go to WalMart and buy a gun. Regardless of who wins this election trouble is going to erupt, particularly in urban areas.”
“I Have a house full of firearms. I have a Weatherby 270, two 22 cal rifles, three shotguns “12 and 20 gauge” and a glock model 30 45 cal I carry everywhere. I have a conceal carry permit. Trust me, these obamatons are nothing but thugs and thives and crack whores. They are also weak liberal homosexual white men and lazy entitlement minded white women. Obama will lose on 11/4. The Joe the Plumber revelation which exposed Obama for the socialist he is will be his undoing. I plan on being loaded up after 11/4 and in prtection mode. I expect the blacks to riot because of ocurse they are all animals. Let them riot. I am not afraid. Big mistake to attack me is all I can say.”
“If Obama loses, be preparded to defend this country from the radical left leaning liberal socialists. When they take to the streets, don’t run away, run out and fight them and drop them where they stand.”
“All my Republican friends and myself can pick out a Liberal a food stamp away. NEVER has any Liberal/Muslim/Democrat attempted to hassle us. Our spouses as well. Maybe it’s our energy or something. Maybe it’s they would be thrown to the ground and silenced in all of the time it took them to yell “racist!” or ” More food stamps!”.”
“Personally cant see any reason to vote for obama. Unless you hate America, hate white folks or are just awaiting an even bigger government handout than you’ve been getting.”
“Too bad it was in New York City. Here in Texas we could have shot the liberal panocho.”
“wake up … whether you believe or not there is an overt anti white agenda being propogated in America and I will not buy into it”
“Anybody catch Keith Olberman last night??? I can’t wait for the guy to hang with his minions in hell.”
“We do not like Black people here in America. We do not like their actions, music, or way of life here in 2008. We do not like Muslims and the religion of Islam. We do not want their way of life here in America.
If this is being a racist in 2008 then that’s what Myself and MILLIONS and MILLIONS of others here (and round the world) are.
The Hijacking of our nation will not happen.”
“It’s only a matter of time, but Barrack will abandon his wife and kids, like all black men do (including his own father), so they can live off of welfare. Barrack will eventually quit his job at the White House as President and start a drinking binge, probably some dope too [he's already done it, he admitted such in his biography], and hang around his terroristic loser friends.
So, don’t worry if he gets elected… by the statistical trends of black men, he’d be unable to tough it out and be a real man anyway.”
“Folks need to defend themselves and their Free Speech rights with Pepper Spray and Tasers, to start with, then they can escalate if the feel it it is necessary, measured, and appropriate. It may become necessary at some point.”
“To all you Obama supporters out there, BE CAREFUL WHAT YOU WISH FOR,IT MIGHT COME TRUE.Al Queda wants a MUSLIM STATE, and you will be handing it to them.”
Me again: there is a frightening amount of both overt and suppressed rage and violence in these comments. Many that I chose not to reprint express the belief that liberals are violence-minded, and they can’t wait to beat/shoot/kill the liberals when the violence comes to their doorstep. Those of us who have hung around therapist types recognize this as projection: attributing your perceived enemy with the traits you most hate about yourself. The term comes to mind every time I hear a McCain surrogate deriding Obama as running “the dirtiest, most racist campaign in history”. Um…really? ‘Cause everything I’m seeing in the GOP ads and hearing from the surrogates would point to it being the opposite. But I digress…

I agree that it is pretty sick, but at the risk of being expelled from the luddosphere for acting as a devil’s advocate, I have to point out that there is quite a bit of rage coming from the left as well.
One could refer to the “Sarah Palin is a C***” t-shirts that seem to be making their rounds on the web, or the fact that persons screamed that same word at her at a recent hockey game.
Also: an interesting piece I read recently detailed the use of Carlin’s “7 words” in left- and right-leaning blogs. The difference in the two sides showed that the big 7 were used on average about 300,000 times more on the 18 liberal blogs as opposed to the 22 conservative. See it here: http://www.thenewsbuckit.com/2007/02/seven-words-you-can-never-say-on.html, but take note, it IS on a conservative blog, so take it with a grain of salt.
My personal favorite (alas it has been taken down) was a report on The Daily Kos that reported an assassination attempt on Cheney. The comment field was filled with people lamenting the fact that our Vice President wasn’t killed.
You’re right, though. It has been a racist, sexist campaign, and people on both sides are acting childish.

Gah! You see what just happened? Two (apparently) reasonable persons holding forth on the idiocies of the screaming 5%.
I hereby respectfully withdraw from the conversation, and all conversations about politics.
