Booked Up is closing

The best bookstore in the world is closing its doors–in all five buildings–at the end of the year. Mr. McMurtry says that the number of customers is dwindling, and he’s getting too old to keep up the business. It may open again…someday. If I had the millions that it would probably require, I’d buy the place from him and run it myself. I’ve always wanted to own a bookstore, and Booked Up is exactly the type of store I’d have, with a few modifications. Its five buildings each house their own genres, but beyond that the books aren’t in any particular order. It’s the perfect environment for browsing. The heady scent of aged paper fills the air. Rare and obscure literary gems await discovery somewhere upon the towering shelves. If you’re lucky, you might spot Mr McMurtry himself shelving or pricing books.

Booked up has two disadvantages: it’s not very easy to get to, unless you live in nearby Wichita Falls. Otherwise, the nearest large town is Dallas, 100 miles away. You have to be a pretty dedicated bibliophile to make a special trip there. The second disadvantage is that you can’t buy their books directly online. There is a request form that you can fill out if you’re looking for a specific item, but that doesn’t quite cut it. There is a large market among serious collectors if Booked Up’s rare volumes were more easily accessible. Mr McMurtry has some seriously rare books among his collection, many beyond the reach of my pocketbook, that true bibliophiles would love to know are there. The real money in the used book gig is to be had in collectible volumes: rare, antiquarian, first-edition, signed, and limited-edition. If you don’t push that part of the business, you aren’t going to do much better than break even.

But I digress. Booked Up will be greatly missed. It’s the flagship in the dwindling fleet of quality independant book stores. I already had a trip to there planned for May. I’d better make the best of it.

The new fear

Part of my job is managing antivirus protection on all of our servers. So I was fairly amused when I noticed posters and flyers going up all over campus promoting “Computer Anti-Virus Awareness”. I’d scan one in for y’all to see, but quite honestly I just don’t care enough. Basically, they feature black-&-white mug shots of people who have supposedly allowed viruses to infiltrate the network through their carelessness. Slapped across each person’s forehead is the word “GUILTY” in red stencil. At the bottom it says, “Don’t let this happen to you! Learn how to protect your computer against unwanted intruders by visiting [blah, blah, blah]“. To me they looked just like…World War II propaganda posters. So…I downloaded images of a few famous posters and modified them with an antivirus awareness them. Click on the thumbnails to see the full-size versions.

Who is MicroSoft?

I don’t normally cross-post from the Collapsing File Cabinet blog, but these photos of Lake Superior in winter were too good to not share.

Yes, you do.

City in my mind

“There’s a city in my mind.
Come along and take this ride
and it’s all right, it’s all right.
And it’s very far away,
but it’s growing day by day,
and it’s all right, it’s all right.”
–Talking Heads

When I write, the ideal situation is to become a victim of my ideas. I know a story is good when I find myself no longer in control of it. Characters behave unexpectedly, and words and actions occur on the page that I had not planned. Sometimes it’s frustrating, because the storyline can suddenly veer in an unexpected direction, and I find myself taking notes from the back seat while one of my characters sits behind the wheel. At other times–to make a worse metaphor–ideas sometimes slip up from behind and mug me, then rifle through my imagination for storylines they can take for their own.

Sometimes the process is reversed. Sometimes I have to go hunting the story with a butterfly net. (Be careful; a story is a very fragile and delicate creature, and is easily damaged. Too rough and it will never fly again.) You see, occasionally, a scene will present itself, unbidden, in my mind, and I have to figure out what story it belongs to. I’ll see the characters, their setting, what they’re doing, but that’s it. I have to study the scene and piece together the clues, deducing motives and prior events like a detective. Here are three people sitting at a small table in a narrow Manhattan cafe. It’s obvious that two of them are a couple: they sit just a little too close, and lean into one another, amost as though they are afraid of something. I wonder what. Not enough clues to tell yet. The third one, a girl, pushes an amulet on a chain across the table. She speaks in many voices, like a radio being flipped across the stations. I wonder what that amulet does. It probably has something to do with why that couple is afraid. I’ll have to follow them for a while longer to find out what they’ve been up to before now. And that girl with the strange voice. I’ll bet she’s not human…

Tracking down a story like that really is a lot like investigating a murder mystery. Only the victim is me. Stories don’t always do what they’re told. Sometimes they become the master and lead their author by a leash. Sometimes they run off and lead him on a cruel game of hide & seek.

“We’re fighting a war against evil. We’re fighting evil.”
–G.W. Bush

The girl in the photo above has just had her parents shot to death at a security checkpoint after their car failed to stop. If you want to shed a few tears, the whole sad story is here. Remember this girl when you see King George partying at one of the nine inaugural balls today.

I’m not entirely sure what to do with myself today. I thought of wearing black, out of mourning for my country, but I did that for a week following the election, and seemed redundant. Instead I’m wearing green, because I feel slightly sick to my stomach. Initially, I intended to go on strike today. Stay at home and not turn on the TV, maybe create some art. I’ve too much to do at work, however, so I came in. As I see it, my work here managing servers in some small way benefits the legions of patients who come here seeking solace, some of them strikingly similar to that little girl in the photo above. They take priority to my own personal pity party. The next four years will happen regardless of what I do today.

The one small protest I’ve decided is worthwhile is to not contribute to the economy for a day. For this day, I will not spend a penny, nor use services that bring profit to others. (I realize that using Internet access to post this could constitute using a for-profit service, but Blogger is free, and I’m using my company’s Internet access, for which they pay a flat rate.) I made my own coffee this morning, brought leftovers for lunch, and I filled a bottle with my own purified water at home. I put gas in the car yesterday, so I will not visit a service station and show my support for Shrub by consuming oil. I deliberately left all of the change out of my pockets so I will not be tempted to purchase anything from a vending machine. My cell phone (a pay-as-you-go model) is turned off today. (Actually, the battery is dead, which is a good discouragement.)

For today, my iTunes playlist is locked on “Rock Against Bush” (which I stole off the Internet, BTW), and I turned off sharing on all other playlists so anyone in the office accessing my iTunes share will only be able to get “Rock Against Bush”. If I get the urge to watch a movie later tonight, I have a couple of unwatched Netflix DVDs, so no trips to the video store. Will the economy notice my absence? Hardly. But I’ll feel better about myself with the knowledge that my miniscule economic protest symbolized a refusal to support the twit we’ve been stuck with.

Be strong. The next four years is going to pass for better or for worse, and the best we can do is ride it out. It’s dangerous times, and the popular revolutions of old will not work they way they once did. We need to come up with our own revolutions, new ways of thinking for these new times. Copy music. Copy movies. Remix, rematch, release. Create art and place it in public. Operate a pirate radio station from your car. Hold a public handfasting ceremony. Place your personal stamp on society. The one thing that cannot be squelched or legislated away is you, and you and I will not be hidden away.

I end with some words to inspire your own inner revolution.

“I believe that unarmed truth and unconditional love will have the final word in reality. This is why right, temporarily defeated, is stronger than evil triumphant.”
– Martin Luther King Jr, Nobel Peace Prize Acceptance Speech

“What am I in the eyes of most people–a nonentity, an eccentric, or an unpleasant person–somebody who has no position in society and will never have; in short, the lowest of the low. All right, then–even if that were absolutely true, then I should one day like to show by my work what such an eccentric, such a nobody, has in his heart.”
–van Gogh

“Quiet minds cannot be perplexed or frightened, but go on in fortune or misfortune at their own private pace, like a clock in a thunderstorm.”
–Robert Louis Stevenson
